Tiempo e historia en De cuando en cuando Saturnina

This paper rises from a reflection on the notion of \u2018time\u2019, \u2018history\u2019, and \u2018past\u2019 starting from an analysis of the science fiction novel De cuando en cuando Saturnina -Saturnina from time to time- Una historia oral del futuro (2004), written by Alison Spedding (Belper, Inglaterra, 1962). In particular, it will be shown how the novel to dispute the historical narrative and the temporal linearity, and advance an acute social criticism of the contemporany Bolivia and, above all, against the hierarchies of power in its intersectionality of \u2018race\u2019, class and gender, as historical constructions that legitimize social inequalities. Finally, this article aims to explore the narrative mechanisms through which the ideas of oral \u201ccounter-history\u201d and Aymara temporal \u201cconcentricity\u201d are reflected in the novel, at a structural and thematic level.Este texto surge de una reflexi\uf3n sobre la noci\uf3n de \u2018tiempo\u2019, \u2018historia\u2019 y \u2018pasado\u2019 a partir del an\ue1lisis de la novela de ciencia ficci\uf3n De cuando en cuando Saturnina -Saturnina from time to time- Una historia oral del futuro (2004) de Alison Spedding (Belper, Inglaterra, 1962). En particular, se mostrar\ue1 c\uf3mo la novela no se limita a cuestionar el relato hist\uf3rico y la linealidad del narrar temporal occidental, sino que avanza una aguda cr\uedtica social de la Bolivia actual y, sobre todo, en contra de las jerarqu\uedas de poder en su intersecci\uf3n de \u2018raza\u2019, clase y g\ue9nero, en cuanto construcciones hist\uf3ricas que legitiman las desigualdades sociales. In the present work, we analyze the poetic self-translations of the Puerto Rican author Rosario Ferr\ue9 (1938-2016). It is a significant case study of how the self-translator becomes a mediating agent in the sociocultural contexts in which it moves, interacting in an inseparable way with the tensions constantly negotiated. In a game of changing translative strategies, in which the self-retraining creative dominates, Ferr\ue9\u2019s rewritings reflect not only on the dynamics of power between languages and cultures, in particular between the English and Spanish languages, on the island of Puerto Rico, but also about the phenomena of migration and the presence of Latin communities in the United States

Stereotactic body radiation therapy for liver tumours using flattening filter free beam: dosimetric and technical considerations

Purpose: To report the initial institute experience in terms of dosimetric and technical aspects in stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) delivered using flattening filter free (FFF) beam in patients with liver lesions.Methods and Materials: From October 2010 to September 2011, 55 consecutive patients with 73 primary or metastatic hepatic lesions were treated with SBRT on TrueBeam using FFF beam and RapidArc technique. Clinical target volume (CTV) was defined on multi-phase CT scans, PET/CT, MRI, and 4D-CT. Dose prescription was 75 Gy in 3 fractions to planning target volume (PTV). Constraints for organs at risk were: 700 cc of liver free from the 15 Gy isodose, D max < 21 Gy for stomach and duodenum, D max < 30 Gy for heart, D 0.1 cc < 18 Gy for spinal cord, V 15 Gy < 35% for kidneys. The dose was downscaled in cases of not full achievement of dose constraints. Daily cone beam CT (CBCT) was performed.Results: Forty-three patients with a single lesion, nine with two lesions and three with three lesions were treated with this protocol. Target and organs at risk objectives were met for all patients. Mean delivery time was 2.8 ± 1.0 min. Pre-treatment plan verification resulted in a Gamma Agreement Index of 98.6 ± 0.8%. Mean on-line co-registration shift of the daily CBCT to the simulation CT were: -0.08, 0.05 and -0.02 cm with standard deviations of 0.33, 0.39 and 0.55 cm in, vertical, longitudinal and lateral directions respectively.Conclusions: SBRT for liver targets delivered by means of FFF resulted to be feasible with short beam on time. © 2012 Mancosu et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd

Why 'scaffolding' is the wrong metaphor : the cognitive usefulness of mathematical representations.

The metaphor of scaffolding has become current in discussions of the cognitive help we get from artefacts, environmental affordances and each other. Consideration of mathematical tools and representations indicates that in these cases at least (and plausibly for others), scaffolding is the wrong picture, because scaffolding in good order is immobile, temporary and crude. Mathematical representations can be manipulated, are not temporary structures to aid development, and are refined. Reflection on examples from elementary algebra indicates that Menary is on the right track with his ‘enculturation’ view of mathematical cognition. Moreover, these examples allow us to elaborate his remarks on the uniqueness of mathematical representations and their role in the emergence of new thoughts.Peer reviewe
